Last week was a big week for Apple. Not only did they launch two new iPhones but they also released their latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, across their iPhone, iPad and iPod devices. iPhone users all over the world got busy downloading and implementing the system almost immediately and, as expected, the opinions are mixed. This blog aims to give you the top tips to downloading and using the new system.
If you are the type of person who can't live without your phone for more than a minute then listen carefully. Downloading iOS 7 will take about 2 hours maybe more. Be prepared to be 'disconnected' for a period of time whilst the new updates take over your phone.
In an instant you will see the new look when your iPhone switches back on. There are circular designs for numbers on the passcode screen, the colour of the folders automatically match your home screen picture (and there is mixed feelings about this), the keypad for texting is different, the texts look different and so on. Ultimately the design looks fresher, for want of a better word.
This is one of the iOS newest features. You can now swipe from the top and the bottom of the screen to get information. The top swipe focuses primarily on updates from your apps and calendar. The bottom swipe brings up airplane mode, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, do not disturb, an orientation lock, brightness control, music, a new flashlight, calculator, clock and the camera. You can access the lower dashboard while your phone is locked too.
When you double click on your home button on your phone, all of your apps will appear in a series of screens and you can scroll from left to right.
The camera has stepped up a gear, and to be honest it needed to. You can now choose from high dynamic range and panorama pictures. You can also use a new square option, like Instagram, and apply multiple filters to your pictures. Your photos are also sorted into groups by date making it easier to sort through the masses.
There is no longer a limit on the amount of apps you can keep in a single folder. You can now cram them full with as many apps as you like.
Safari has been given a huge makeover with a new design and shared links through Twitter. The music app now has iTunes radio similar to Pandora and because of the iTunes link you can automatically buy music from the station you are listening to.
When you search for something on your phone, all you need to do now is swipe down anywhere on your screen and the search field pops up with the keyboard.
Is someone calling you persistently trying to sell you something you don't need? No worries, your iPhone can now block certain callers for you. By clicking on their information in the Recents Menu you can scroll down and block. This person will no longer be able to contact you by phone, messages or FaceTime.
As was expected, the system isn't completely flawless. There are some formatting issues cropping up within apps. Instagram is all off shape on the screen for some iPhone models. But no doubt with a couple of extra updates, Apple or the specific apps will iron out the kinks.
